Small Group K-2
“Talk It Over”
January 24, 2010

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Virtue: Discipline—doing what you need to do now so you can grow stronger.
Faith Skill: Articulate faith (share and defend)
Memory Verse: “Training the body has some value. But being godly has value in every way. It promises help for the life you are now living and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8, NIrV
Today’s Extra Verse: “I pray that you will be active in sharing what you believe. Then you will completely understand every good thing we have in Christ.” Philemon 1:6, NIrV
Bible Story: Talk It Over (Peter states who Jesus is) • Matthew 16:13-17
Bottom Line: If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. GET TO KNOW YOU (a classroom-wide activity)
Instruct kids to get into groups according to a specific characteristic, such as: same eye color, same birth month, same shoe color, etc. Once they’re all in groups, ask them to find a partner from their group that they don’t know very well and sit down with that person. Then give instructions on what the partners should talk about, such as: what they had for breakfast, what their favorite TV show or movie is, what they want for their birthday, etc.

CLASSROOM FACILITATOR: “You were able to get to know somebody a little bit better just by talking with them for a few minutes, weren’t you? [Transition] Let’s find out who else you can get to know better by talking to your friends.”

Lead your group to the large group area.

·          Jesus Is …: Print the “Jesus Cube” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site) on cardstock and prepare as directed. Also provide a small stool and a Bible (preferably NIrV).
·          God Loved Game: Print “God Loved Cards” (from the Activity Pages on the Web site) on cardstock and cut them apart. Provide one set of cards for each child, plus five extra sets. Glue one set of cards to a piece of colored paper. Also provide a Bible.
·          Line Up the Cups: Reprint “Memory Verse Phrases” (Activity Pages) from week 2. Glue the phrases to disposable cups.
·          Wrap Up: The Classroom Facilitator will need the “Step It Up Motions” Activity Page from last week.

* 2. JESUS IS …            SUPPLIES: “Jesus Cube” (Activity Page), stool, NIV Bible
Tip: When kids say things out loud, it helps them solidify what they know. Give them a chance to do that here. Read today’s extra verse aloud (Philemon 1:6). [Apply] Explain that it’s important to tell our friends what we know about Jesus. Ask kids what Peter said about Jesus in today’s Bible lesson. (That He is the Christ, the Son of God.) Comment that Peter and the other disciples knew who Jesus is, but that other people didn’t understand that Jesus is God’s Son. It’s important to know who Jesus is. Show kids the “Jesus Cube.” Explain that it tells more things about who Jesus is. Read each side, showing the kids the words as you read them. Ask kids to repeat the phrases, and explain to them what the phrases mean if kids don’t understand. Then give each kid a chance to roll the cube, stand on the stool, and read what the cube says. Challenge them to tell other things they know about Jesus that aren’t on the cube.

3. TELL THEM: “You sure know a lot of things about Jesus! [Apply] Once you know things about Jesus, it’s important to tell others what you know. Peter did that in today’s Bible story. And that’s something I do every week as your Small Group Leader. I tell you things about Jesus. The most important thing I can tell you about Jesus is that He loves you and wants to be your Savior. God loves us so much, He gave us Jesus—He sent Jesus here to show people what God is like and how much He loves them. When Jesus died on the cross, He did it to take the punishment for our sin. When we believe in Jesus and ask Him to forgive us and to be our Savior, He will be. And we’ll live forever in heaven with Him and God and everyone else in heaven. That is such good news that God wants us to tell our friends all about it. That’s how I learned about Jesus: someone told me about Him. ([Personalize] Tell kids a brief version of how you came to ask Jesus to be your Savior.)When we talk about God and Jesus here in small group or at home or with our friends, we get to know them better. [Impress] If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends.”

4. GOD LOVED GAME       SUPPLIES: “God Loved Cards” (Act Pg), prepared sheet with set of cards attached, Bible
Open your Bible to John 3:16, and lay the paper with the cards attached to it on the floor where kids can see it. Read the verse while pointing out the corresponding cards. Explain to kids that using these cards makes it simple to tell others about Jesus.
Shuffle the cards, and deal four to each child. Scatter the extra cards facedown on the floor in the middle of the circle. Guide kids to play a version of “Go Fish” with the cards. The difference is that instead of finding four cards that are the same, they need to collect a set of cards—one of each of the four cards.

5. TELL THEM: “Take these cards home with you, and [Apply] use them to tell a friend about Jesus. [Impress] If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends.”

6. LINE UP THE CUPS        SUPPLIES: prepared cups
Say the memory verse aloud several times with the kids. Then line up the cups at one end of your space. Make sure they’re not in order. Guide the kids to line up at the other end of your space. Instruct the first kid to run down, find the first phrase, run back, and place the cup on the floor. The next kid should find the second phrase, run back, and place it after the first one. Continue until the verse is complete. (Be ready to provide as much reading assistance as necessary, but let children do as much for themselves as they can.) Say the verse together again one more time.

7. TELL THEM: [Apply] “Does anyone remember what the word ‘godly’ means? (Pause for responses.) ‘Godly’ means being like God in certain ways. As we become more like God, we want to tell others about Jesus. We want them to know that God loves them. Take some time this week to tell your friends about how great God and Jesus are. [Impress] If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends.”

8. PRAY FOR FRIENDS (pray)
Ask kids to think about a friend who might not know about Jesus. Instruct them to say that person’s name silently when you pause in the prayer below.
PRAY - “Dear God, we know You want everyone to know about You and about Jesus. Help me to tell (pause) about Jesus this week. In Jesus’ name, amen.        [Apply] “It’s important to tell your friends about Jesus, and you can use the things you’ve learned today to help you do it. [Impress] If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends.”

Review the “Step It Up” motions (see Activity Page) the kids have learned so far in large group.

CLASSROOM FACILITATOR: “Before you can tell others about God and Jesus, you have to know about them yourself. When you read the Bible (do the ‘Read It Through’ motion), memorize Bible verses (do the ‘Take It In” motion), and talk to God (do the ‘Send It Up’ motion), at home, at school, at church, or wherever you are, you are getting to know God. Another good way to get to know God is to talk about Him with your friends. So be a good friend to your friends, and talk about God with them! When you come back next week, you can tell your Small Group Leader all about which friends you told about Jesus.”

Small Group 3-6
“Talk It Over”
January 24, 2010

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Virtue: Discipline—doing what you need to do now so you can grow stronger.
Faith Skill: Articulate faith (share and defend)
Memory Verse: “Training the body has some value. But being godly has value in every way. It promises help for the life you are now living and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8, NIrV
Today’s Extra Verse: “I pray that you will be active in sharing what you believe. Then you will completely understand every good thing we have in Christ.” Philemon 1:6, NIrV
Bible Story: Talk It Over (Peter states who Jesus is) • Matthew 16:13-17
Bottom Line: If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ask everyone to draw a picture or cartoon of his/her best friend. Across the bottom of the page, kids can write how they met their friend. Let every person have a few seconds to tell about his or her best friend. [Personalize] Be sure to do this yourself.

SMALL GROUP LEADER: “I enjoyed hearing about your friends. And I loved hearing about how you met your friends. What do you enjoy doing with your friends? What do you enjoy talking about with your friends?[Transition] Let’s go to large group and learn something else God wants us to talk about with our friends.”

Lead your group to the large group environment.

·         Patch Work: For each small group, provide paint, paintbrushes, tape, and large pieces of art paper. Hang a banner that says, “Who Do you Say I Am?” on a blank wall in each classroom.
·         Four Parts: Use masking tape to make a crossword puzzle on the floor, following the example on “Four Parts” (ACT PG). Provide a copy of “Letter Cards” (ACT PG).
·         Scripture Jumble: Provide Bibles, copies of “Scripture Jumble” (ACT PG), and pens or pencils.
·         Courage Prayers: Provide a Bible, a large piece of art paper, and markers.

2. PATCH WORK              SUPPLIES: Markers, art paper, banner, tape
Ask kids the following questions to review the Bible story:
  • Jesus asked an important question. What was it? (“Who do you say I am?”)
  • Who did He ask? (His disciples)
  • Why is it important to be able to answer that question?
  • Would you be able to answer that question if someone asked you who Jesus is?

Point to the banner on your classroom wall and explain that, today, everyone will get to answer that question in their own way—by drawing a picture of who they say Jesus is. They can draw Him as a friend, as love, as Teacher, as compassion, as Healer, or as anything they can think of. They can draw in any style they wish: realistic, expressionistic, graphic novel, cartoon—whatever appeals and makes it exciting for them. As kids work, encourage them to articulate who Jesus is to them. [Personalize] Tell kids how you would answer the question, “Who do you say I am?”
When kids finish, let them hang their pictures under the banner, along with all the other small groups, like a patchwork quilt.

3. TELL THEM: “Wow, look at all these pictures. Isn’t it cool to see how Jesus is so many different things at once? Jesus is our Savior, He is love, He is forgiving, He is compassionate, and He is so many other things. He was even a man and God at the same time! We can talk with our friends about all these aspects of God. When we do, we’ll get to know God better. [Impress] If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends. [Apply] How do you benefit when you tell others about God?” (The more we talk about God, the more we understand who He is and what we mean to Him. A sign of truly knowing someone is to be able to describe or explain that person to others. We demonstrate our faith in God when we talk about Him to others. Our faith grows stronger when we articulate what we believe.)

* 4. FOUR PARTS (application activity)     SUPPLIES: masking tape grid, “Letter Cards” (Activity Page)
Show the kids the crossword puzzle grid on the floor. Point out the three letters that are already filled in (L, E, E) and tell kids that their task is to work together to fill in the other blank spaces with the “Letter Cards.” Give kids this one clue: “The four parts of John 3:16.” Then hand kids the cards and give them a few minutes to complete the puzzle. Don’t give them any other hints. (Answers: loved, gave, believe, receive.)

5. TELL THEM: “Now that you know that God wants you to talk to others about Him, it’s important to know what you can tell others. These four words make it really simple for us. They are based on what the Bible says in John 3:16. Can anyone say the verse for us? (Pause while a volunteer does so.) First, God loved us. He loved us so much that He sent His Son to die for us so our sin can be forgiven. The only thing we have to do is believe this is true and ask Him to forgive us and be our Savior. When we do, we’ll receive His gift of forgiveness and live forever in heaven with Him. Let’s repeat the four parts: God loved, God gave, we believe, we receive. This not only helps our friends understand what God did for us, but it helps us, too. It helps us know exactly what God did and how we can have a relationship with Him. [Impress] If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends. [Apply] Who can give me an example of how you can use these four words to tell others about Jesus? (Pause for responses.) See if you can use these four words to tell someone about God this week. I can’t wait to hear how it goes next week!”

6. SCRIPTURE JUMBLE (memory verse)     SUPPLIES: Bibles, “Scripture Jumble” (Act Page), pens or pencils
Pass out the copies of “Scripture Jumble.” Explain that kids need to unscramble the letters of the key words of the memory verse and insert them in the blanks. Once they have done this, they should copy the letters in circles to the bottom of the page and unscramble them to answer the question printed at the bottom of the page. Encourage kids to work from memory, but provide Bibles for kids to use if they get stuck.
(The answer to the question at the bottom of the page is: Tell them about God.)

7. TELL THEM: “This verse says we should be godly. It also says there is value in being godly. What are some ways to be godly? (Pause for responses.) One way to be godly, or more like God, is to tell others about God. It can be a hard discipline to learn, but it’s really important. Just think of the benefits. [Impress] If you want to know God better, talk about Him with your friends. [Apply] How does developing the godly discipline of talking about God with your friends benefit you? What are some rewards you can experience immediately? (Pause for responses after each question.) What are some long-term rewards? Do you think this is a valuable discipline? How can others benefit when you tell them what you believe about God?”

8. COURAGE PRAYERS (pray)          SUPPLIES: art paper, marker, Bible
“We all have fears of what our friends will say” (What if they laugh at me? What if they don’t believe me? What if they stop being my friend? What if they get everyone else laughing at me? What if they believe something else? What if I can’t explain it right to them? What if I mess up? And so forth.)
[Personalize]Tell kids about how you’ve “told” others about Jesus. Tell them what, if anything, makes you nervous about telling your friends about Jesus. It’s okay to be honest, as it will help kids see that it’s normal to be nervous.         “Let’s pray and ask God for courage to overcome our fears and to follow through and tell our friends on the list about Him.

CLASSROOM FACILITATOR: “This day has been awesome! I can’t believe what a beautiful quilt you made about Jesus. I love it. Now remember, you each have a job to do this week: find a way to tell a friend about Jesus. Maybe you’ll mention one little thing, like how much fun you have at small group, or where you go to church, or your friend might ask you some questions about Jesus. Your Small Group Leaders and I pray for you every week, but this week we will pray about this in particular for you. We can’t wait to hear the results! See you next week.”
